How to get a Boat Licence

All Hands on Deck Maritime Training have bee conducting Boat Licence course training for over 15 years. We are a Registered Training Organisation (RTO #90927) with the Australian Quality Skills Authority (ASQA). We are also an ‘Approved Training Provider’ (ATP) with NSW Maritime.
We conduct Boat Licence courses using our own training vessel and as an ‘Approved Training Provider’ we are approved to incorporate all the Logbook requirements into a short practical training session. This means when you undertake a Boat Licence course with All Hands on Deck Maritime Training you will save time and money as the following applies:
* No Logbook is required
* We use our own training vessel to meet the ‘Practical’ requirements
* You do not need to go out on a boat on 3 separate occasions
* We are fully insured
* We conduct courses weekly and also by Private arrangement
* We have been conducting Boat Licence training for over 15 years

Knowledge required to obtain a NSW General Boat and/or Jetski (PWC) Licence
To obtain a NSW General Boat and/or a Jetski (PWC) Licence requires knowledge in the following areas:
- Registration and Licencing Rules
- Distance to keep from people and objects
- Safety Equipment to be carried (Enclosed & Open Waters)
- Wearing of Lifejackets
- Responding to emergency situations
- Collision Regulations (Lights & Shapes)
- Buoyage System – Lateral & Cardinal Marks
- Preventing Fires
- Survival at Sea
- Environmental regulations
- Alcohol & drug regulations

PRIVATE Boat Licence Practical Session
Not able to attend one of our scheduled courses? Why not book a private course session? We can conduct Private Boat Licence course sessions consisting of the Practical component and final exam at any RMS office from 2 to 6 persons on a day to suit you (subject to vacancies as we do lots of training).
Our course fees for private Boat Licence training are as follows:
2 persons – $295.00 each
3 persons – $275.00 each (Save $20.00 each)
4 persons – $265.00 each (Save $30.00 each)
5-6 persons $255.00 each (Save $40.00 each)

Pensioner Concession and Young Adult (12-16 years) Boat Licence
Pensioner Concession or Young Adult Boat Licence Practical Session
This option is the most cost effective and quickest method to obtain a NSW Maritime General Boat Licence for a Pensioner Concession or a Young Adult General Boat Licence (for those persons 12 – 16 years) The following Units of Competency* are mandatory requirements to obtain a NSW Maritime Young Adult General Boat Licence:
- Carry out Trip Preparation and Planning
- Safely Operate a Mechanically Powered Recreational Boat
- Respond to Boating Emergencies and Incidents
Location: Course are held in Newcastle weekly
The simple steps to obtain your licence are:
1. Complete some pre study activities online (We provide FREE pre study material to you)
2. Complete the Practical session on our vessel (Approx: 3 hours)
3. Sit the final test at any RMS or NSW Service Centre.
Cost of training: $225.00. Payment: Course fees are to be paid in full at time of enrollment. Enrolments can be made at any time. All course notes, manuals, assessments, training manuals and materials will be forwarded to the student at this time.

Obtaining a NSW General Jetski (PWC) Licence
The NSW Maritime Personal Watercraft (PWC) Licence, which is commonly known as a Jetski Licence, is a separate licence to the NSW Maritime General Boat Licence. To obtain a Jetski Licence you must:
- Already possess a NSW Maritime General Boat Licence, or
- Have completed the NSW Maritime General Boat Licence Complete course (details above)
The Jetski (PWC) Licence course can be completed at the same time as the General Boat Licence course and takes about an additional 1 hour and cost $75.00 if completed at the same time as the Boat Licence (Save $35.00)
